With approx. 28,000 inhabitants, Heppenheim is the center of administration for the Bergstraße region. „Bergstraße“ is both the name of the main road B3 from Darmstadt to Heidelberg, as well as the countryside nearby. The Bergstrasse is known for its extraordinarily mild, sunny climate and early blossoming of trees.

Heppenheim has a largely preserved, self-contained, picturesque old town center with an area of around six hectares, which is characterised by half-timbered buildings.

The city area itself is located below the Schlossberg hill with the medieval Starkenburg castle. The townscape is characterised by the castle and St. Peter's, the "Bergstrasse Cathedral", which is the popular name for the large church.
